GCL Review Test Issue

In July 2019, Great Canadian Longform will produce a test issue of an email newsletter of original content.

The Great Canadian Longform Review will feature, at minimum, a newly-published longform piece, an in-depth interview with a writer featured on GCL, a nonfiction book excerpt and a nonfiction book review.

The GCL Review will be sent out to our newsletter subscriber list and shared online via our social media accounts and website.

Following the launch of the test issue, we’ll assess reader feedback. If feedback is positive, we’ll move forward with six more issues that will be sent out bimonthly. After the initial six issues, we will we again reassess the project.

We’re seeking paid contributors for two features for our test issue: a nonfiction book excerpt and a nonfiction book review.

Please share this information with anyone you know who might be interested. We’ll respond to all pitches.

1.-Nonfiction book review

We’re looking for a review of a nonfiction book written by a Canadian author for a Canadian publisher. The book in question should be forthcoming or published within the last three months. (We’re not looking for reviews of genres other than nonfiction.)

We’re especially interested in a review for a book from a smaller publisher that would be unlikely to appear in a major Canadian magazine or newspaper.

The length of the review should be expected to run between 600-800 words.

No previous reviewing experience is necessary, but if you have any please include links to your work in your pitch. (This includes self-published reviews on a blog as well as those published at digital publications or in magazines and newspapers.)

The reviewer will be paid a flat rate of $75.00, on Net 30 terms following publication.

2.-Nonfiction book excerpt

We’re also looking for an excerpt from a nonfiction book written by a Canadian author for a Canadian publisher. We’re open to different topics, particularly cultural criticism, history or memoir/personal essays.

Excerpts should be 1200-1500 words in length and self-contained. The book in question should be forthcoming or published within the last six months.

We’re especially interested in an excerpt for a book from a smaller publisher that would be unlikely to appear in a major Canadian magazine or newspaper.

The author will be paid a flat rate of $125.00, on Net 30 terms following publication.
